INTRODUCTION

I           JEWISH RELIGIOUS TRIAL

A         PHASE ONE:  ARRAIGNMENT BEFORE ANNAS — 2:00 A.M.

Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him and brought him first to Annas….  Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.”  John 18:12-13

B         PHASE TWO:  TRIAL BEFORE CAIAPHAS — 3:00 A.M.

He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the             slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.” Isaiah 53:7

“Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”  “I am,” said Jesus.” (61b)

“The high priest tore his clothes.  ‘Why do we need any more witnesses?’ he asked.  You have heard the blasphemy.” (63-64)

“The one who blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death.”  Leviticus 24:16

Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said,             ‘Prophesy!’ And the guards took him and beat him.”  (65)

C         PHASE THREE:  PUBLIC RETRIAL BY THE SANHEDRIN — 6:00 A.M.

“Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, reached a decision.  The bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.”  (15:1)

II          ROMAN CRIMINAL TRIAL

A         PHASE ONE:  JESUS BEFORE GOVERNOR PILATE: 6:30 A.M.

“I find no basis for a charge against this man.” Luke 23:4

B         PHASE TWO:  JESUS BEFORE GOVERNOR HEROD — 7:00 A.M.

“When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod….  When Herod saw Jesus…he plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.  The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him.  Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him.  Dressing him in an elegant robe, and they sent him back to Pilate.” Luke 23:7-11

C         PHASE THREE:  JESUS BEFORE PILATE — 7:30 A.M.

Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people and said to them, ‘You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion.  I have examined him in  your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.  Therefore, I will punish him and then release him.

With one voice they cried out, ‘Away with this man!  Release Barabbas to us!’”  Luke 23:13-18

“The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of  thorns and set it on him. And they began to call out to him, ‘Hail, king of the Jews!’  Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.” Mark 15:16-20

III         GOD’S PURPOSE WAS ACHIEVED FOR OUR SALVATION

“Yet it was the LORD’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering…. “  Isaiah 53:10

“We are going up to Jerusalem…and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise.”  Mark 10:33-34

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”  John 10:18
